Each day, 1 or 2 individuals will add notes that summarize the day. These notes will be taken on the Scribe Notes page for that particular day. Feel free to add pictures, files, and links if deemed necessary.
Scribe(s): Derek Houser, John Grabowski
Notes:
Class began with a presentation from Neil Huber on Edmodo. The demonstration consisted of:
- how to create a class
- examples of digital stories
- sample assignments, how to create them, how to post them and how to grade and give feedback
- description of some of the extras that can be used (such as badges, polls, etc)
- ideas on linking edmodo pages with other content areas
- discussion on regulating page, administering, concerns administration has and what can be done to get over those hurdles
Hat Day Competition:
6 competed and Rhea's super soft, super warm, always travels in her car in the winter hat was the winner
Took a quiz on course syllabus (submission for one ticket)
- showed how the quiz feature worked on edmodo
- questions included technology resources required, 4 course requirements, how to get an A on assignments and in course and the attendance policy
- went over answers
-Groups looked at the information on their topic that had been bookmarked on diigo as part of yesterday's assignment
- each group made a concept map to help brainstorm ideas for the glog and posted to wiki. Concept map was used as one of the ticket assignments. Students had a choice between three sites
- Groups then began creating their glog, which is an online tool that helps create a digital poster from Glogster EDU.
- There was a bit of a technological learning curve but the groups created very different products that contained text, audio, video, art, pictures and tables that supported the topics
- Topics included
1. Universal Design-discussed using new technologies to help stimulate different learning parts of the brain and that as educators we want to spend the most time targeting the front lobe which is involved in strategy and problem solving skills
2. Digital Natives- discussed how the students we are teaching are digital natives, that they have been surrounded by technology since they were born and how many of us have had to be integrated into the digital world. Important note that the students who are digital natives do not think in such a linear process and are more likely to learn from visuals, which is the opposite of many of those who teach them who are linear in their thought processes and learn through text.
3. Math Common Core- New movement that requires teachers to combine elements of math into coursework. Discussed how the changes in teacher and student assessments and affect how instruction is being designed.
4. ELA Common Core- the importance of integrating literacy elements into all classes. Standards are requiring teachers to use more non-fiction texts and focus on digital technology skills in the classroom.
5. New Literacy- focuses on the new forms of information that are available to students and how they consume that information. Students need to learn how to critically consume information and fully use the information effectively.
Digital story brainstorming assignment ticket was moved to next class
