What tools did you find the most interesting and/or applicable?
I feel that when technology is applied using UDL principles, it allows the instruction to be flexible. The teachers can provide multiple means of representation and expression while fostering the design and development of engaging learning environments.

According to research (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/news/8615989/One-in-three-overwhelmed-by-technology.html), one in three people are “overwhelmed” by technology. Personally, I am not overwhelmed by the technology itself. I am overwhelmed by the AMOUNT of technology that is available to us as teachers. As I looked at the different tech tools for UDL, there were so many that I had never seen before. At the beginning of my exploration, I was excited to learn more about the tech tools and to experiment and test their functions. Unfortunately, as I continued to explore, an uneasy feeling grew inside of me. I thought to myself, “I have been unaware of the existence of all these tools. What other great tools am I missing out on? I want to be an expert on every tool so that I can use them effectively in a classroom. With the amount of technology available, I know this is an unrealistic aspiration (especially when new technology is being developed daily).” Sharing my thoughts doesn’t exactly address the question, but I’m curious how everyone else is feeling...

To answer the question, I found the following sites to be very interesting: Voice Thread (Multimedia & Digital Storytelling Tool) and Braining Camp (Math Tool)

A VoiceThread is a collaborative, multimedia slide show that holds images, documents, and videos and allows people to navigate slides and leave comments in 5 ways - using voice (with a mic or telephone), text, audio file, or video (via a webcam). VoiceThreads can be shared with others who can respond with recorded comments of their own. Users can also doodle while commenting, use multiple identities, and pick which comments are shown through moderation. VoiceThreads can even be embedded to show and receive comments on other websites and exported to MP3 players or DVDs to play as archival movies. Like Rhea, I think this is a great tool. I am itching to try it out!

Braining Camp is also a great tool that can be incorporated into grades 6-9 math instruction (whole group or on an individual basis). The website features 5-10 minute lessons that contain graphics, animations, and audio narrations. It also features virtual manipulatives, opportunities for assessment, and “real life” challenging problems. The website is great because it is both visual and interactive. It makes abstract concepts more concrete. Students enjoy it because it is exciting, fun, and dynamic. Teachers are drawn to it because the lessons are aligned to the core standards. I feel that the use of this tool would be beneficial to all.
Intergrating technology into UDL allows for encompassing a larger range of learners. When looking at the guidelines for UDL, simply by using technology, you are adding so much more to the lesson that encompass UDL. For example, students are having different ways to express themselves and are seeing new ways to be engaged. I also like the use of digital stories and agree with the point that Dawn made regarding ELs. So often we talk about giving ELs practice with the language but I rarely hear how we should take the next step and make it engaging for them to practice that language. Using a digital story is a fun way for them to practice the language without it feeling like a language assignment.
A program that I recently learned about in my literature and technology course right before this was called Jing. I haven't got to explore this program as much as I like, but what I have seen has impressed me. It is a free application and fabulous for actively engaging in student work. The teacher or students have the ability to use screen shots, record their voice, and insert visual and auditory aids. An example of the use of this site is on the site itself where a teacher used this application to grade and assay of a student. For this she was able to talk, highlight key points, and move the document as a video recording. This way the student would be able to go back and listen to the commentary again. This is just one example of how Jing can be used and I'm sure there are many creative and fun activities that can be implemented with this application. It was helpful to see how the lessons were laid out and how they accommodated the various UDL guidelines. At the UDL tech wiki I liked a lot of the study skills tools. I think the various flash card applets would be beneficial to my physics students, who have a lot of concepts to remember for the Regents exam they take in June. I feel that there are so many skills and goals that students need to meet that don't include the use of technology. Don't get me wrong... in our current generation technology is something that has to be introduced to enhance learning and extend our future knowledge of technology. However we can't forget the fundamentals. Writing, book handing, creating artifacts that represent knowledge with hands on materials and manipulative are so important and need to be maintained as well.
@Dawn - again, I swear our thinking seems to be so similar! :) As much as I can see the importance of adding technology into the classrooms I also don't think we can forget about the importance of actually physically holding a book, turning pages, and getting lost in a book. Or as you mentioned the child who loves to draw/create on paper. I am so NOT a creative person, so I could totally relate the stress you remember when it came to dioramas and I definitely was one of those kids who didn't get the help at home. Therefore mine was not the one getting the oohs & aahs! I sometimes wonder if the same would hold true with students being required to make their own books online, at home, and who might really be doing them? Their parents? Of course the student who loves technology might get really into it, but what about the child who doesn't have the equipement at home or simply doesn't care for it. A BALANCE indeed is needed!

However, having a bag of resources, just like having a bag of tricks for behavior management surely seems doable! :)

Finally, I agree, that there definitely seems like there is more than enough for each grade level and therefore for each teacher to be able to find something that would work for her student(s) or her class.

Ashley, and I agree, students are losing the ability to write, not only grammatically correct, but also literally how to even write in cursive because sadly it's no longer needed.

Some of the tools that I did like though are: the handwriting resource as this is so often true of many boys; the text to speech...great for special ed and learning needs; and for a fun tool with my little ones...I liked the Storybird as well Rhea as they love anything colorful! :-) So many to choose from, but where to start...
In today's society I believe technology truly does make everything universal in the classroom for our students.
@Rhea & others that addressed Orton Gillingham...yes, I would have to agree that it's a very dry lesson doing the exact same thing every single day. There were some good things to the lesson such as presenting the material in different ways for the students. For example, I had them practicing them in multiple ways such as on the blackboard, on their note packets, and on individual white boards. Hopefully this made the material accessible to everyone as it could be experienced different ways. I could have used more technology in order to engage the students in a better way. I also realized from looking at UDL guidelines that I could have engaged the students more with exciting background stories about their Punnett square examples or by using visuals.
@DawnCross, again, I TOTALLY agree with you about trying to teach Kindergarten students about geometric 3D shapes with 2D paper & pencil. Ugh, we go through this every year when we HAVE to teach it because it's one of our standards, and worse yet test them on it with the paper & pencil test that comes with our math series. The good news is that I too bring in shapes from home: boxes, cone hats, ice cream cones, an orange cone from the gym class, balls for spheres, blocks for cubes, and cans for cylinders. During the lesson we have a short discussion about how various traits can help or hinder an animal in its daily activities. The students are then given a spoon, a pair of forceps, and two toothpicks each to represent a different bird beak. They then have to pick up as many different types of candy as possible with each collection apparatus. The students then complete a series of questions reflecting on their experience. To conclude, each group shares its findings and we discuss which birds would have been most successful and least successful in the wild based on their findings. I feel as though this lesson meets UDL guidelines '2.5 Illustrate key concepts non-linguistically", "3.2 Highlight critical features, big ideas, and relationships", "4.2 Provide varied ways to interact with materials", "8.3 Foster collaboration and communication", and "9.3 Develop self-assessment and reflection". I do think the lesson has its barriers to the UDL guidelines as well. I don't think it meets "1.1 Customize the display of information". Since there is only one method to doing the activity I do not think that I really meet the guideline of customizing the lesson to fit every student. I also do not account for "2.4 Promote cross-linguistic understanding" in my lesson, mainly because I do not have a need to in my district.
The lesson that I chose to retrofit is a culminating activity for my unit on solving systems of linear equations. The activity requires my 8th grade students to transfer their knowledge of solving systems of linear equations to plan and organize a successful popcorn sale. I like this lesson because technology is used to engage the students. They use their graphing calculators and Excel spreadsheets to generate and organize data. Analysis of this data allows the students to create and validate sale-related decisions. I also require my students to summarize their decisions in a Word doc using graphical, tabular, and symbolic representations to aid in their explanations.

This particular lesson incorporates many of the UDL Guidelines from the Educator Checklist (3.1-3.4, 5.1, 5.2, 6.1-6.4, 7.2, 8.3, 8.4, 9.1). As stated above, the students must transfer their knowledge of solving systems of linear equations to plan and organize a popcorn sale. This requirement activates background knowledge (3.1), highlights big ideas and relationships (3.2), and maximizes the transfer of knowledge to new situations (3.4). Multiple technology tools are utilized for construction and composition (5.2). Also, the summaries of the students’ decisions make use of multiple media for the communication of their thoughts and ideas (5.1). Much of the work is completed in small groups. This fosters collaboration and community (8.3). The lesson is, without a doubt, authentic and relevant (7.2). One barrier to the lesson is its lack of differentiation. This lesson also fails to optimize individual choice and autonomy. This would be a chemistry lesson for a high school class. I have already incorporated some technology by having my main topic be presented in a prezi presentation. This is customizing the display of information. There is also a hands on portion of the lesson where students actually get to test solutions using a buzzer to see if they contain ions. I do go into vocabulary with the presentation, fairly easy with the way the prezi is set up. However when looking at the UDL guidelines, there is not enough interactivity in my lesson. I give my presentation, then we test solutions, there needs to be a middle section that allows students to be involved with technology, and interact and show that they are really learning. I do not leave room for discussion in the lesson which needs to be made. And also I don't really have a goal setting section.
